Dungeon Finder changes

This is hot off the press.. and I felt driven to comment.

There are new Dungeon Finder changes being made to stop abuse.

Wow insider article linked here

  • Players who are outside a dungeon for more than a few minutes are now immediately able to be kicked.

It is disrespectful making people wait at the start,  and I have come across those um,  interesting people that leave party and came back when it suits them.

  • If queuing as a group with a tank or healer, and the tank or healer drops group (or is kicked) soon after joining, those that queued with them will also be removed from the dungeon.

HAHA no more tanks selling Insta que’s then leaving.

  • If three or more players group queue with each other it will require an additional vote for them to kick anyone they did not group queue with.

I can see this being a little more fair. It can stop unfair ganging up on one player and they would need to annoy  4 people not just three.  However,  if that 4th person is the person your trying to kicks friend,  well your all stuffed, and let the battle of wills, and who leaves first commence.

  • If a group queue of 4 kicks the one person that they did not group queue with they will each receive a more severe penalty to their ability to initiate future kicks.

I don’t like this one.  Some of the people I run with are allergic to Pugs, and so perhaps are a little harsher to strangers then they could be,   but there is  ok,  and there is bad, it really depends on what they do.  Eg if the Pug is a tank, that can’t tank, ninja looting, doing bad pulls,  messing up cc,  and is not listening to the healer crying out for mana then expecting a rez after a wipe all the while sprouting bull crap about how awesome he is. He deserves to be kicked. But as a single pug coming into a party of 4  –  as one person put it ” feel kind of outnumbered”  there is no  Us – its us and them. So I understand the need to protect people from the mean masses,  just wish there was some kind of check balance,  in that if someone keeps getting kicked from the groups that they queue for,  something has to be wrong with them.

  • If someone initiates a vote kick for someone they group queued with they will not incur a penalty to their ability to initiate future kicks.

Not sure how this stops abuse,   when one of the people you queued with needs to go, they are more likely to leave party.  If I even considered that someone I queued with outside of Lfg was going to be kick worthy, I wouldn’t be queuing with them in the first place.

Value adding as a Lobie Druid healer

I wrote  a while a go  that your healers should be dpsing too and I would rather a bored healer dps then do stuff like pull for the tank, or *get distracted and not be quick enough to heal when the tank actually needs it.

* raises hand – Guilty your honor  I was in cat form when the tank died.

I regularly try to slot some Dps in on my two priests when I am healing,  but I’ve not gotten to try the smite dps/healing style of a disc priest in a 25 raid. I went Disc this week  on my 2nd priest for our  LK 10 kill and achievement , and the earlier weeks H LK attempt, and was too busy bubbling and penancing to have time to Smite to build up my stacks to get my pretty wings.  (bad enough I forget I have barrier and Power Infusion)

So as for Dpsing as a  Resto druid, I have been leveling mostly through dungeons, holiday quests, cloth hand ins, and the rare bg ( 30-40 bracket getting one shot by rogues. NOT FUN)  and she has a few things she can do to help an encounter along damage wise,  she will moonfire every now and then, cast inspect swarm but considering I am getting tanks screaming ” BIG PULL LOL”  and running off in the distance. I don’t always have mana to spare.

There are two non healing spells I am trying to use as often as possible though.

Faerie fire

“Decreases the armor of the target by 4% for 5 min. While affected, the target cannot stealth or turn invisible. Stacks up to 3 times”

Thorns

thorns sprout from the friendly target causing * nature damage over 20 seconds.

I try to get the three stacks of Faerie fire up on the Boss Target because it all helps right?  a 12% armour reduction is nothing to sneeze at especially if there are no Rogues or Warriors – or they aren’t putting up their own armor reductions – though things die so fast I don’t really need it.

The biggest offensive ability I am using  – for which I do not get credit for which I think sucks, is Thorns.     I am using Thorns on the tank when there is a need for Aoe.  This has been awesome in keeping threat off me, and thorns does well for damage done when fighting groups of mobs. Things die quicker, I don’t get hit as often,  I help the tank do better dps,  I posted a recount for damage by ability of the tank in a Sunken Temple run, and thorns was # 2.  I like not getting hit by dragons,  and those trash packs can be interesting.

With content as is now – pre cata – there certainly is opportunity for more healers to throw out some damage as well, but like overzealous, mob pulling dps – it could teach us some bad habits.  You heal because you heal.  That’s your job,  your main focus needs to be on that role or the reason why roles exists fail. The party fails.

I got too cocky, and was in cat form skull bashing, and shredding mobs in Mara. I got silenced and couldn’t heal the tank. My pre hots had worn off,  he died because I was reaching outside the bounds of my role. It was all good though.  One Battle rez later, and an apology, and I never did it again that instance.

I like feeling more useful than just as a health bar toper upperer  ( the Faerie fire in a 25 man should not even be required with the other classes in the raid doing their thing)  and I can certainly see the benefit of casting thorns on the tank. It’s only one more GCD, I have a power Aura set up for it so I know its ready to be cast.  It does more damage. Better agro, and I probably don’t have to cast it at all. No one will notice.   Parties only realise that I am being a little more useful than a healing machine when I point out ” wow look how much damage my thorns are helping you do”

It’s a tool that I think that even though I am healing and have to remember to keep using it  – it makes sence to make use of something that is so beneficial for the good of the party.

The 3 P’s

Patch

The patch has really thrown me off kilter. My toons are strangers.   I have 5 80’s on 3 different realms, two  are priests so it’s was a little easier sorting the 2nd one out, but I am happy with my Shadow and 2 holy specs between them.  I reforged 2 pieces on my Shadow Priest, lost some hit for Haste, and I am at 17.8 hit now.  I only need 17%

Hunter and Mage I just went duhhhhhhhhhh  smacked around a test dummy, and went this is is too complicated.

I use Vuhdu as my Raid Frames,  all my healers click to heal, I tend to look at health bars anyway so I have ingeniously set up my mend pet on my hunter as a click on the  pet bar raid frame, I will expand on this idea of other things I can stick on there like some more pet commands. I am a bad hunter in that I don’t care about my pet’s health as often as I should. This should make more aware.

Warrior is still sitting there waiting to be logged into. She scares me the most.  The tanks I have been healing have lost their smoothness, the confidence, the control – I am sure it will all come back,  but I didn’t so much have those qualities before the world got turned upside down. So I am not ready for her again. Yet.

There were so many things missing from my bars.  Food, pots, flasks, hearth stone. Like. WHY! * hunts rounds bags to find them all again. I am still missing spaces on all my toons, and I am thinking crap – what am I missing.

I don’t like Bging at this moment. I feel weak, and even wearing 1.2 resil – getting cut down way too quickly.  I am dispelling more in BG’s for now, there seems to be more to dispel, and people are dying to easily to dispellable things. I am liking healing holy for now though as I am able to pump out heals pretty quickly,  ( as long as I am resilenced up )  mana regen seems ok  or maybe I am just dying more before I get OOM.

Yeah for saving 5k on already having 310 flying – I had my Ulduar and ICC drakes on my main,

I am working on getting my 4k justice points,  1k to go and I dragged a poor friend through Heroics last night who was confused why I would be needing so many ‘badges’. I am hoping it will give me some advantage come Cata since they will still be rewarding JP points for the normal 80-85 runs.

Pugging

It burns. I am hurting.  I am tired of my soul being separated from my body after dying from the most stupidest things. I haven’t finished a TOC on Proudmoore yet.  ( insert random things pugs do to fail ) I think most issues could have been resolved with better communication and a little more patience. I would rather 2 extra min highlighting important parts of a fight,  then a wipe. I don’t care if you have your achievement.  It probably means you got it dead on the floor anyway.  Though vent as a communication channel in a bad pug is as bad as no vent in a bad pug.  Very hard to take a RL in ICC serious when he is stoned.  Though he did offer to let me take over RL  if I ” kept talking”  This was kind of funny because the girl who told the raid  that she was ” Blonde – hot – with a great butt” got less attention then me who congratulated someone on getting Trauma.  Next time I take it over. I swear if it means we actually get further I will raid lead. No more interjecting with small suggestions like kill the spikes – or waiting for the RL to finish slurring his so-called strat.  Lets see who I can pee off by being a pushy bossy chick because at this rate I don’t think I could  make it any worse.

I have a baby resto druid I am leveling through LFG. Lobie LFG’s are a bit like a DND dungeon – it doesn’t matter what your role is,  if you rolled a higher initiative then the tank you go first. I offered to stop healing a pesky tanking mage  – tank said to let him pull, so I worked twice as hard keeping the mage and the tank up. Thankfully the mage had to stop occasionally for mana. Another tank in stockades asked for a little patience because this was new to him.  He got it, and he learned from the experience.

A rogue critiqued my healing ” Why did I die”  he asked ‘ Maybe it was the 6 mobs you agro’d running ahead.”  I said ” Maybe it was cause I got no heals”  he said. So I told him ” I can’t heal through stupidit”  ” You can’t spell”

/sigh ( I was typing too fast!) It doesn’t matter what you say or even if you are right, it’s how you spell it!

I like my druid. Maybe because she’s a lobie, I get to learn her slowly.  I think too much time has passed between playing my mage and hunter regularly, so I don’t know them at all. Losing most of my buttons off my bars  didn’t help.  Since when do mages have mana gems? ( Jokes. Kinda. I sorta did forget.)

I did a  couple of gnomer  runs and taught the first group where to jump.   2nd party didn’t need instruction they just did it, and of course, mage and hunter pets were not dismissed and we wiped.

Releasing before combat ends in some instances means for what ever reason, intended or not that you  rez at the graveyard with hardly any health.  This seems like a lot of potential fun   nuisance on a pvp realm.

Priesting

I might be going holy in Cata.  I love shadow, and I will always have an offspec, but I always feel more wanted as holy. I know I should play what  I have the most fun playing,  but fun is  also seeing content, it’s killing things, it’s not dying, and half my problems and stress as a dps disappear when stuff like killing adds is no longer my problem at all, and if the DPS don’t get the healers out of things like spikes then they die, and being just another dps isn’t special. Especially when dps now seems so much more just that  they are damage dealers.  They just damage with different pictures on different buttons, where as a healer you enable people to do damage no matter what picture is on their buttons.

It’s not as often a healer links their metres to boast. Mostly because less people care about healer epeen,  ( though I know healers do also have egos) and stuff like overheals, and dispels can be linked as counterarguments anyway. Everyone else is being distracted by their DPS epeen.

I have been playing Shadow ever since I left my first kara guild, and I learned that the Shadow /Disc spec I was in was bad for my dps, and I upset them by saying – “I’m not spec’d right – I don’t want to be your spirit buff ho anymore” I have casually raided as holy, but I haven’t changed my mains as people do,  but I love the priest class.   It’s under my skin.  Maybe it is time to change to heals.

A Vote to Let them die.

A recent comment on a recent tanking post got me thinking about how I use the Vote to Kick.

“Anonymous says

The reason: vote kick has a cooldown, and the more times you use it, the longer cooldown becomes. Vote kick must be available to get rid of game-ruining player, not lost on minor inconvenience.”

I think most of the recent  votes to kick I have initiated since this cool down change has actually been  people who dc, and even then casually suggest ”  should we kick the dc”  and someone else does it.

I got burned bad back in the early days of tanking in Mara.   We had two dps afking at the start of the run.  It was like they wandered off and  did something else while we killed stuff and they got free xp.  The cool down wouldn’t let me kick them both. So I try not to use it.   Kicking someone from group for peeing me off isn’t as high on my list of things to do as it used to be, and I guess that’s the point.   I don’t think I ever kicked for anything trivial, but it’s forced me to triple think, I want to be able to use it when I NEED to use it, but  as another commenter said often its not worth it. How many of us are complaining about the state of attitude in groups now,  ‘not worth’ it is rather defeatist, and at least I am feeling a little defeated. It doesn’t matter what the role I’m playing.  Often there is always one person who makes it their job to make everyone else s just that little bit harder.

Petty Reasons

On my main in my healing gear I was doing a POS, it was a high hp tank who knew what he was doing, so I started dpsing too,  a couple of dots,  a mindblast,  and some mindsearing in a group.  We had a DK dps not doing so well, and I was beating him.  Tank linked the damage metres and had a laugh at the healer and the tank out dpsing a dps.

Tank initiates a vote to kick,  I say no.  It fails.   Tank then says ” 100 gold”  and the party is like “?”

“100 gold each to carry you” he says to the DK. ” don’t be silly” I say in party chat.  It put me in a bad position because I was being an over-confident /bored healer,  trying to make things go a little bit faster because I didn’t have to worry about the tank as much.I may not have come to the tanks attention if I had just done my selected job.

I zoned into another instance into what looked like a wipe recovery.  People at half health,  scattered cross the instance probably running back.   One of the Dps was slow running back,  not stupid slow and it is frustrating when one person is holding the group up,  but we were buffing, and the rest were drinking, and he was at least on his way, but someone  initiated a vote to kick.

” Why… “

“He is too slow”

It failed thankfully.

They highlight why there has to be a cool down so that petty reasons do not succeed.   I’ll steal anonymous words again.  ” game-ruining player, not lost on minor inconvenience” Game ruining is trying to cause a wipe,  refusing to do your job / afking – being grossly offensive – and that’s about it.  There are so many minor things which are still going to get the dungeon cleared,  just aren’t going to make your game fun.  The vote to kick wasn’t aimed at getting rid of people stealing your fun unfortunately.

Let them die

What if there was a  “Let them die” vote. I was taught that not taunting off a dps made me a bad tank.  So I feel it’s my responsibility even if it’s their fault.

Letting them die needs a collaboration between a tank and healer – healers feel its their job to heal.  Tanks react when they lose control of a mob ( usually)  and try to grab agro back. There has to be an agreement between tank and healer to let them die.

As a healer I’ve told dps to let the “Tank tank.. ”   Linked damage metres to show they took most of the damage  that the tank should have.  I am not sure how I would react if a Tank asked me to let that person die,  and stop healing them.  I knew he was being bad,  I knew that this would have stressed the tank out, spending more time trying to grab agro back then concentrating on tanking.  Given what I know, if I felt the tank had good reason to say that  I would support the tank if I felt I would be supported in my decision to refuse to heal, and not only is our tolerance for bad a problem,  but also what is missing is the lack of support that the other players give to the people who are trying to change that.

Could I tell a healer  to let someone die – maybe.  I think if the situation got extreme again, I would.

However imagine the scenario

“Tank:  DPs1 stop pulling

DPs1: Your too slow

Tank: Healer just stop healing him

Healer: um..   ok..

DPS2 : Just pull the boss

DPS3:  finish the Fracken instance

Lack of Support

Because everyone “Just wants their badges so we can all go home.   Healer and Tank  refusing to compensate for a person making their lives difficult are not going to get the other dps’s support, and the tank and the healer will be the ones slowing up the instance by causing drama or making a fuss, not the asshat in the first place, and that’s the sad part.  I guess when you talk about this different mentality you need to have when being the healer, or the tank – it can also mean you are very much all alone, and the price of your conviction inconveniences the rest, and what would cause the most stress,  is not the asshat, but not feeling supported for doing ‘the right thing”.

Your Enjoyment

We had a bad dps  in an instance say ” Hurry up – I need to go soon,”  I told him to “dps faster”,  and also said ” why is it the person doing the least damage is that one that wants to hurry it up”  I don’t like being that person – but I tried it on for size,  and it didn’t make him perform better – or the run more enjoyable.

I think this is where ” it’s not worth it” can make your experience better, Ignorance is bliss. How bitter those words taste.  If only I derived more joy from being snarky at people.   Then maybe I would feel better about sounding like the asshole.

But Support the right decisions.   Maybe I should have supported the vote to kick the slow dps,  but  there are so many other factors we would need to ask them – new player? First 80? new Spec?  Lag? to at least justify why we thought they were bad.   They were just low, and in the scheme of things stuff was dying. It was ok.   Don’t support the person who is a little slow running back ( little..  ) Personally I would LOVE to kick the people who want to vendor/repair/get reagents as soon as they zone into the instance. Usually it’s dps who have had how many  min’s of waiting time to be be prepared.  We get to the first boss. ” Hey I’m back” – you didn’t need me” but again.  Is that a kickable reason? In comparison to what other crap people pull.

We need an I like bubbles “Vote to kick”  Friday Flow chart.

But for now you get a pic of my cat being  grumpy.

Tank available for free. Just Pst me.

“Hi – are you a tank?”

“yes”

“Wanna run a dungeon?”

He was level 77 Mage, ( I was 78) I said yes.  I finished checking the AH on my  Tank, and had been planning on Queueing anyway.

“Invite” he says, but can you wait till I finish my Bg?”

“uh…  ok.”

Waiting..  Waiting…

5 min later.  ” You can queue now”

So we queue,  and I don’t get an insta queue.  Waiting on  a healer.  I suspect because   of this..

This is my understanding on how the LFG Queues are filled. So a tank gets an insta queue, and clears  Line 1,  Healer gets an insta queue and clears Line 2

I come along with one DPS – and I couldn’t fit into group 1 2 or 3,   so  my Party,  A Tank and a DPS  gets shuffled all the way down the bottom so we fit into a group together.

“Sorry, It doesn’t normally take this long” I apologise  after 5 min – like it’s MY fault the queue isn’t instant.  More like it’s his fault. ^^ see above.

“Going for a smoke” he says.    1 min later – Queue pops. I click it.  Waiting.. Waiting..   he is still not back  – We miss the Queue.

1 min later I am thinking WTF am doing this for a complete stranger who is wasting my time

“You have 30 secs” in party chat.

about 40 sec pass and I leave party.

” I’m back” he says, and reinvites me to party  ” I’ve just got to do something”

“Queue now, or I leave.”  I tell him

He queues,  and it pops in a about 2 min.

We do VH – no deaths/wipes   – ” Want to do another? – I need to do more”

‘No thankyou.” I say.

I blame the posts from  Klepsacovic from Troll Racials are Overpowered “Dear Blizzard, Please end our loneliness”  and Adam from The noisy Rogue’s  “I am a Social Leper”  that got me worried that I am not friendly enough, and that I should give random people who whisper me nicely  more attention, and maybe they are just trying to be nice,  and friendly,  and that they don’t want just to sell me gold, or hack my WOW account.

 I can do reasonable requests.

Not only  did he make me wait till he finished his BG. ( and complained that all Alliance are nubs) He then made me queue longer, then he goes for a smoke making us miss the queue we had already waited for, and then wants me to wait for him while he does something else.

I should have said no, but I was trying to be nice. . It could have been a wonderful experience, and I could have waxed lyrical about the benefits of running with random people.

It was about 16 min of my life wasted – for a stranger. No personal benefit. The only thing he learned about me was that  this was going to be my 5th 80 – and all I learnt was that he smoked, and cared enough about his PC/whatever to not do it at the computer.

I do not feel like I have connected with the human race  in any useful capacity

So what was the point?

I wonder how many people he went through looking for a willing tank.  Used to happen all the time in BC -” can you heal this..  can you run this for us.. “

He didn’t ask in trade,  didn’t offer gold,  he just whispered random people  his request hoping for a bite.  He did it while in a BG too,  forward planning his convenience at the cost of others.

It’s  reasonable to ask someone to wait a couple of min,  but you  should do what you need to do first  before inconveniencing people, and not make people wait for you when your the one doing your own thing. I am not at your beck and call.

People wonder why people are so un-helpful. It’s partly why I don’t respond to LF enchanters anymore.  No one is bloody organised enough before they ask for people to do what they want.

So if I am feeling nice next time, and it’s gonna take a while to   build my friendly bar up again. Like Taxi’s when you order them ask “Ready now?”

IF YOU SAY NO – I shall say no too.

What a Satchel of Helpful goods should really be like.

Thats a DPS Que I mocked que’d for just to see what its like on the other side of the fence  – as a tank mine is practically instant.  Sometimes it varies as healers seem to have availability fluctuations in lobie instances as well.  The horror.  Making a tank wait for a healer for a whole min.

See It’s kind of unfair when chain running instances to not let the dps cycle through.     You requeing with that same tank means you stay at the front of the line, and someone elses wait is a little longer.

So I think of tanking a little as a community service,   I am helping make your wait times shorter.  Need to spread that tanking love around right?

I am getting a useless collection of crap from the Satchel of Helpful goods though.    I can’t seem to find a use for the Spellpower mail,  or wear then more than one pair of gloves at a time.

So  this is what I would like to see in my Satchel.  A couple of pieces of bread,  chance of a weapon, or a extra gold.  While I know what ever you get from a satchel is still really welfare loot, little things like maybe a health or mana pot, some stam food, chance of a novelty item  HAS to be more useful then 10 x one neck.   They don’t even vendor for much ><

DPS can’t tank.

LFG has long been a endless source of material to moan and complain about – but I think I’m getting cleverer.

Inserting Witty comments and the like. Right before I leave group.

On my Healing priest –  I could see the tank was out of range because my raidframes had him out of range,  and here I see this hunter shooting at meathook.  So I heal him, and I’m  keeping him up,  and then he stops kiting, and feins,  so someone squishy starts taking damage,  and he’s a little harder to keep up,  and its all going ok untill like 20% and everyone starts dying.  That’s when they realise OMG the tank was afk and didn’t rescue them.

My Tank Brynhild is now level 30  ( and having a short break,  cause I kinda got excited and now have outleveled my leveling partner ) but I am educating the dps about not pulling in most of my runs.  It’s an important lesson to learn.

We let one die.  ( I was in cahoots with my healer) that was a bad one.  Like he had been asked, told,  Pleaded with, and he didn’t even try to bring it over.

I am somewhat patient.  They get a couple of mistakes,  but -” please don’t pull” is usually said at least once an instance.

The fun ones have been when they have gone off to other parts of the room,    ( eg 30 yards away in Gnomer) to pull, and then yell ” help”

It got so bad every time one run I was letting the healer drink  I was saying “Don’t pull”  incase they got trigger/dagger/random mage spell happy – that’s kinda funny.  The Tank having to tell them not to pull.

I asked why did you  pull

” Your too slow”

I replied “Healer had no mana”

” Oh”

I supposed if I am able to rely less on a healer.  EG  Keep a lot of Health pots on me,   I could go faster. I’ve gotten a few Oh Crap button cool downs now,  Last Stand,  Shield Wall  – so can survive a little easier.

I am finding with repetition comes a lot more confidence.  I found my Tank leading voice on my 5th or so run of Gnomer in a row.    “We are going to Jump,   aim for the middle of the Cog.”  and  now I have apparently outgrown Gnomer, so LFG has been sending me into Scarlet Monastary Graveyard.  Which is only a very short instance – I ran it four times in a row with basically the same group ( of course they were happy to requeue if the tank was)

There’s one thing that has been bothering me. I wonder if I should be displaying my Cloak? – you’ve heard of plummers crack?

This is Tauren Cow crack.
