Sacrificing Spell damage for Hit.

So I actually looked at some of my stats in light of a guild forum post recommeded Shadow priest Stats and Concluded my Spell hit was too low.  It was 56 – So Ive now upped it to  76 which is what I needed to cap it out.   But I’ve had to lose some spell damage to do so.  It also means that I can’t wear  some of my gear without losing my spell hit. So Im back to 995 Shadow Damage. /cry  but it will stop alot of resists so should improve my dps..

As a Shadow Priest, you kinda have it easy. You only need 76 Spell Hit to reach your cap. As a Mage, I need 164 Spell Hit for mine.

You should be seeing an increase in your DPS with your new Spell Hit. It might not look like much, but 995 Spell Dmg at 99% Hit is better than 1025 Spell Dmg at 97% Hit.

Spell Hit > Spell Dmg > Spell Crit

Actually, you will probably end up stacking a lot more than 76 spell hit as a shadow, because you will always have gear that has spell damage and spell hit…
This will actually allow you to free 1-2 talent points 😉

But don’t forget spell haste in your funny “Spell Hit > Spell Dmg > Spell Crit”… Oh, and where does Spell Penetration rank for you? And where does subtlety stand?

    Yeah, and so on…

Although it is not as easy as shown above, you usually can go along those lines pretty well.

I’ve been looking at improving my Talent Shadow Power, ( i think its that one) it will improve my Crit Chances – However only 2 of my Damge spells Crit Shadow Word Death and Mind Blast, and the idea of continously Criting myself for 3k damage on a crit Shadow Word Death ( it backlashes if its not a killing blow.. and then hear “Self healing only now” over vent – So then its Dot Vamp embrace again, and Mindblast and Mindflay untill full health again..

and Mages! u out dps us all! my Little Almost Level 50 Mage is doing 900-1100 Fire balls at 50 with +180 fire Damage – Feels weaker then my Priest for armour, so I am encouraged to kill the mob alot faster But yes we do have talent points as a priest to reduce the spell hit on gear requirement.

I think the rule of thumb is 1% dps increase for every 1% extra +hit, so you’ll definitely win in the long run. TBH I’m interested in knowing how you managed to get to 1000+ shadow damage WITHOUT capping your spell hit! I have it coming out of my ears at about 900…

I had a weird mix of Arena current season, PVP gear & Kara Gear, Everything was also Enchanted ( including +12 to rings ) /Gemed /Enchanced to the max. ( yeah soulfrost) I have spent the cost of an epic flying mount in re-enchanting/threading/Geming ect ect.. and I also have them on my Pvp set and Healing enchants on my Healing set.

Mmmmm I worked out why my Hit rating was so low – my weapon upgrade. I swapped My Curator Staff http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28633 which had Hit on it – for an Offhand & The Mindblade http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28770 that didn’t and Here I was thinking I was a complete noob and had been running round without decent Hit rating,

Oh of course, pvp gear… I only play pve so always forget.

You’re ahead of me with gear so take this with a pinch of salt but I’d advise you to switch back to your mindblade and offhand (orb of the soul eater for 25 badges is the best choice) and try and find your hit elsewhere — frozen shadowweave/spellstrike/belt of blasting for example — as a main and offhand will give the biggest +damage. Of course, if you don’t have that option, you’re right to stick with the staff for now.

@merlot I likes my Mindblade.. and I spent toooooo much on a soulfrost enchant to not use it.. but I think I have found a nice medium of all the right gear so will see!
