Growing up in a leveling guild it was rather exciting to be able to go DING! in guild chat. However when you have 30-40 lobies on at peak it gets rather annoying.
Ding!
grats!
Grats!
Well done!
GJ
Woot!
Yeah!
Well done!
Congrats!
Nice!
Weeeeee!
x that for every level…..
Ding!
it got to the point where I would “Ping” instead of Ding…
and then when it got really bad, we were Macroing our congratualtions.
eg
/G Congratulations on reaching such a esteemed level we offer you our heartfelt wellwishes and continuation of your journey…
Ding!
so now add statements like that to a “Ding!” and suddenly everyone presses their macro buttons and there is a wall of text.
I gave up dinging.
There has to be some unwritten rule like any level under 30 is not worth dinging over….
Don’t forget about the “non-dings”
Ding! Journeyman Fishing!
Ding! Honored with Shattered Sun Offensive!
Ding! 200 Sword Skill!
Dammit.
This is one of my pet peeves. Personally, I don’t think people should announce dings unless it’s a real milestone. So pretty much either hitting a mount level, or the level cap, are the only times I’ll respond to a “ding” message. And I never announce my “dings” myself. I was 70 for days before anyone noticed. At the very least, your new level should end in zero if you’re going to announce it.
In my entire time of playing World of Warcraft, beginning with logging onto my brother’s account during the open beta, I have never said ding when leveling. In fact, I rarely even make notice of the fact that I leveled because, seriously, I don’t care when the people around me gain a level most of the time. Unless it’s a key level (30/40 for mount, 60 for new mount and old cap, 70 for cap), it doesn’t matter.
And I can see being excited leveling as a new player, but if the toon in question is on his way to becoming your fifth seventy why make such a big deal?
Down with dings?
Yeah, I hate when I see a “Ding!” and a /who informs me that the player has just reached the honourable level of 6. I prefer it if they are left for every 10 levels. Just hit 60? Grats! Wow, 70! That’s an achievement. But level 42? *shrug* Not so much.
So I am not evil for ‘forgetting’ to say congrats to a level 3…
Imagine how it would be if you have people using the recruit a friend with tripple xp…
I am relieved to see that I am not the only one who grits their teeth at the dinging –
One of our senior guild members has a macro that spits out “congrats so and so – you’re finally 70”
Now I forget the exact circumstances but someone signed on at the same time someone announced ‘Ding’ in guild chat. So a couple 70s responded with
“dong”
“ding”
“dong”
This sets off the macro…
“Congrat’s N! You’re finally 70!” meanwhile, N has been 70 for months….
so to have fun with this, all the 70s start spamming guild chat with DING to see what the macro will pick up. It was quite amusing to watch some of our long time 70 raiders get congrats on finally turning 70. We all got a good laugh out of it and the macro was disabled to the relief of all of us.
We obviously knew it was a macro as when this officer boxes his toons and someone had hit DING the congrats would come from all his boxed toons saying congrats…. quite entertaining
