Rebel Mage offers free ports.

I like this person

So I mailed them 60 Runes of portals in support of their cause –   ( too little?  too much?)  it was dependent on my bag space at the time, and it was more a token gesture of support as opposed to a sponsorship.

I have been watching the trade chat in response to the mage daring to offer a free service when all the other mages are selling for exorbitant profit and its been funny

They have been called a communist,  they have been officially removed from the mages union  –  been accused to being so lonely they need to offer free ports for attention.   I can’t imagine what sort of whispers they have been getting, as trade chat has been very much against them.

I think mages should make a profit from this opportunity,  but then I can see the reasoning about making the price more reasonable than 20 or 30 gold, but one person charging nothing has forced others to be alot more reasonable.

I’ve not needed a port.  I’d be ok with paying 10g,  and at the moment with mages selling their services as opposed to having to whisper one to ask nicely.  I feel that the convenience of a portal is still  available if I need it and 10 gold is considered reasonable

I would have thought that competition would have kept their fee’s down, ( one person is offering a free ride on his rocket and a portal for 10 gold)

Mages can now offer ports as a money making service,  and are not necessarily being interrupted in their play for one.  They sit in trade looking for work much like a person selling their trade and they can bulk portal people,  just keep inviting them to a group untill the portal  expires.

I’m not going to put a price on someones time,  because forgetting the 18 silver cost for the reagent,  that’s the real cost.  The inconvenience of time, so really people can charge what they want, depending on the competition. I still have the choice of saying no,  too much.

What the free portal person is trying to do, I think is get people to rethink what is reasonable,  and I don’t think they can sustain it, unless they are actually enjoying  what seems to be the main result of their crusade, peeing  people off  in trade as they certainly spent a good deal of time there.

A few people seemed to come around to this idea of free ports, and maybe I wasn’t the only person to send them Runes in support.    Other mages went on ‘union breaks in support of the cause.

I think though I like them more for being different and standing up to the onslaught of a trade attack.  People seem to get really upset when someone cuts into their profits,  and who knows..  maybe they are getting enough tips through this free business to make more money then the people charging 10 gold, and that right there would make them the smarter business person.  Eliminate the competition through  this ‘ don’t get ripped off model’  but then reap rewards from the grateful people.

I have been boycotting mages. On my server (Tichondrious, US) they don’t charge more than 15-20, the going rate being 10g per port. We do have a few that offer their services for ‘free’ on on Tich, but if you don’t tip, you will be ripped apart on trade chat. I do like the wording of the mage you are referring too, and he probably is sincere. But until Blizz puts a Zeplin in Dal, I am refusing to pay for a port. I’ll take public transportation, and really, just like in rl, you meet some interesting people. Today there was 8 80’s going from Borean Tundra to Org, and for some reason, an alliance decided to land on the deck. I didn’t even have time to register what I had happened before he was dead. It broke the ice and we ended up grouping up for some dailies. Anywhoo, so yeah, I am boycotting mages, but your blog did make me think about it some more. But just think. I will not give in!

I usually offered mages 25g to port me to Dalaran, so this 10g out of Dalaran thing sounds like a steal to me.

^ The above post is probably a keylogger.

Also, glad to hear there’s someone willing to compete with the entrenched market on that server. 10g seems perfectly reasonable, 30 not so much.

nah not a key logger.. just seeminly out of place – it leads to a che’ picture done by the person who commented which I think in the context of the mage being a rebel, kind of makes sence

It amuses me how angry people get over free ports!

I haven’t been playing enough to notice the mage fees on my server, nor have I tried to using my mage to make money yet. (I should really get on that!) It makes sense to charge people since you are doing them a pretty big favor but anything over 10g is a bit much.

In the past, I’ve always set my portal prices on a sliding scale. Rude people who ordered me to meet them in another city or used bad language were charged 15-20g (which usually caused a fit, much to my entertainment) and exceptionally sweet people or those who offered tips got free ports.

It felt good, my little way of controlling how people treated me in game.

I have no reason to change my hearth yet. Most of the content I need to do is in Northrend still. And with an AH etc there now in Dal as well, the need to go back to the old world (for now) is quite small.

At any rate, it’s not like getting back to Org or UC (for Horde) is exactly difficult. Just get a zep.

But I must admit – druids and DK’s do get off easier than other classes with their class teleports (At least Horde ones do).

I’m trying not to pay out too much for ports but travelling round Darn, SW and IF for the Pilgrim’s dailies drove me insane. I musta wasted an hour each day in flights since they took the portals away, between one thing and another. Not happy Jan 😦

Set your Hearthstone to either Darnassus or Exodar. Transportation between cities then is a matter of a few minutes.

Currently, Darnassus and Exodar are the same; however when Cataclysm launches, Darnassus will be the premiere city IF your primary motives are transportation — Darnassus allows flying mounts, Exodar does not.

      Assuming a Darnassus Hearthstone:
Exodar: Take the portal in the Temple of the Moon
      Darnassus: Hi.
Stormwind: Take the portal to Blasted Lands, fly through the Dark Portal, take the portal to Stormwind.
Ironforge: Take the portal to Blasted Lands, fly through the Dark Portal, take the portal to Stormwind. Then either take the tram or fly (either via flying mount or flightmaster) to Ironforge.
Shattrath: Equi-distant from all cities since you can use Blasted Lands portal; can also use Blessed Medallion of Karabor if you have one.
Dalaran: Use Argent Coliseum Tabard or Jaina’s Locket or Kirin Tor Ring.

Iron forge has been quite – everyone is hanging out in sw so they are near the docks – but there has beenore traffic through darn- which makes me happy to see people in my ne city:)

It has put a a stop to a natural game flow

Their is a fair bit of this “unless they are actually enjoying what seems to be the main result of their crusade, peeing people off in trade as they certainly spent a good deal of time there” involved. Realise they have done it before with enchanting, saturdsy night I was in and out of main cities for 3+ hours and the discusions they where involved in just kept on going.

Narx horde have it pretty easy anyway, Port to Cot, ride to gadget, fly to org is easy. But all my characters are in org or sw. I lug my warrior from Stormwind to argent tourney every 2 days and thats it. Besides i am doing the cooking daily a lot, selling the meat from 2 days(10 mins realtime) worth of cooking dailies for 500g at level 30 is a nice income.

    I’m a bad mage… I can’t be stuffed with the trade window.

If someone tricks me into accepting gold for a port, I usually make sure that the next 10 people realise that someone else already paid their ride..

Lots of confused people porting about.

I’m happy that people are selling their ports, I don’t care how much… it takes the heat of other Mages just trying to get stuff done, and it allows others to get about that much quicker.

I haven’t given many ports since Shattering, but I usually hand them out during events… and yes, I normally stand next to the guy that is charging while spruiking the free ports.

I am an evil mage, and do not support the free portal model. They’ve been getting free rides for too long. 15-20g per portal. Muhahaha

    • 18 Pugnacious Priest November 29, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Your mean ( kidding) but if you are being asked to drop queues and the like it should be worth your while other wise the word no I’m sure still works

#5: My warlock loves fire mages, they make such good aggro mangtes, and don’t have any lame pets to distract the mobs away from them. She always stays near one, and soulshatters when the going gets hot. Stay burny, my friend.Grimmtooth recently posted..

Yeah dragons kinda get behotrsome after a while, especially when theres 3-4 huge dragons!!!!! And i just had my first bounty, pretty sweet ahahahIm actually shocked how many different types of levels there are, i have to admit that i kind miss how the prelude one was but this definitly increases the replayability ten fold. When the game is fully released, would we have to redo everything? or will our save file work on the full game?and how do we change our avatar, im tired of the blank white square 0 0

  11. 21 ReyJax November 29, 2010 at 9:03 pm

I’ve havn’t been charging for port service, and have seen some very generous tips… No tip = a quick trip to the ignore list though.

Be nice to your mages! Giving a port means we have to group up, dropping us from dungeon and bg queues. If we refuse we are probably 13 minutes into a 15 minute DPS queue.

  12. 24 Intravax November 30, 2010 at 9:16 pm

If I had a mage I wouldn’t charge. I’ve been giving mages average of 15-20g a port and even more if they are nice. I’m wondering if anyone has been ripping off mages by waiting for the port to be summoned and then not paying anything. I’ve not heard of that yet tho.

    • 25 Pugnacious Priest December 1, 2010 at 12:57 am

I think most mages are expecting payment before they invite you to group/cast portal. I’ve not seen any mages ripping people off either by taking money and sending them to wrong places.

  13. 26 Bristal December 8, 2010 at 11:13 pm

A port is worth what the payer is willing to pay. Period. I want to go to SW form Dal right now, I either pay what the porter wants, or take a few minutes to find another. OR I can spend about 5 minutes getting there myself.

    @Intravax
Maybe you wouldn’t charge, but you also wouldn’t likely stand there offering the service, either. You do me no good as a do-gooder who isn’t there to give me a free port. And what would be the point of standing there if you aren’t charging?

The value of a service is much more than just the actions of the service. A port is more than the few silver for a rune and a button-push. It’s the presence of a high level mage, when I need him/her there, who could be doing something else much more interesting with their time.

A bottle of water isn’t worth much next to a sparkling mountain stream. But in a Desert it’s worth a lot.
