I met this random person a BG. Sorta. I don’t remember their name, but we were babysitting Lumbermill and I was sleeping at the foot of the node in boredom and got to talking about the state of Alliance on each others realms, and they mentioned that they had just recently changed to Alliance because they were
“Sick of horde…. they care more about K’b’s than tactics to win bgs”
I didn’t get to tell them ” Honey.. we are the same on this side too” because we got distracted by a hordie trying to cap the node.
I’ve been a big fan of playing to Win in Pvp, but that’s not all there is to Pvp in Bg’s anymore.
It’s about Hk’s it’s about K’B’s, it’s about Faction Rep, Guild Rep, getting achievements and sometimes its just about being a D*ck because it’s a Bg full of strangers.
Even I have conflicting motivations right now, I don’t really care about honor, I’ve been buying chanting mats for weeks so I’m not wasting my cap, and I am So close to my 100k kills –
Which means I should not be babysitting nodes. I should be chaining AV’s and dotting up everything, instead I end up baby sitting Lumbermill, I think I was born with this ‘must take responsibility’ gene. So when the person who capped it runs off, and my pleas of ” you cap it you keep it” is falling on deaf ears I still feel obligated to stay and guard. Cause we are playing to win first right?
But does anyone actually care if we win or lose anymore? When a loss means that you can still satisfy your need to top Hk’s, K’b’s or get, or get closer to what ever achievement your working on now.
The only thing winning does is give you more honor, so if most of the BG doesn’t give a crap about honor – why would they give a crap about winning.
And besides, isn’t it more fun to run a muck… doing what you want zerging bases
The simple motivation to want to win isn’t enough anymore. We are more ok with losing because we get closer to some other goal, when it could all be so simple, the single desire to win.
I have that objective sitting on my screen. I watch it ticking over. I’m not sure what will happen when I get it.
I want to wear the ” Of the Alliance” title, and then I shall faction change and wear
Of the horde just for the Irony that I got it killing horde. ( kind of kidding)
Hmm I hear you there. As a Horde player I get frustrated at times when I see stupidity. Then I think, wait, they must be going for their acheivements (whole endorphins thing…totally separate conversation). But I keep trying. I try for using correct tactics and try assisting where I can. I keep hoping one day I’ll find an outstanding crew and keep with them. Dreams…even muscle bound orcs have dreams lol.
When you do find a good pvp group it makes a massive difference ( to your chance of winning as well as the likely hood of getting strats to work :p) our pvp chat channel was good for that, but we lost a few people from it, and it no longer runs 😦
People win at different things. I could argue that getting the most kills, either hks or kb is winning as well.
Speaking as someone who use to pvp 20 hours a day with premades, we were definitely concerned with hks and kbs. Getting the most hks was a big part of why we were pvping.
To be honest, I am not sure we actually cared about winning the battleground as long as we super smashed the horde. Victory is destroying the Horde and crushing their moral!
Remember those old bloodbaths at Crossroads or Tarren Mills and Southshore? Yeah, that was about the sheer brutal slaughtering.
Haha, I think this is pretty much in any game, the same. I was actually looking for a site on Rift, when I saw a few might read posts. This was one of them…
In Rift, my PvP toon is a main spec Cleric, which would be a healer which has some DOTs, and wears chain. Cool combo… Anyways, there will always be some fool who rushes the other side, in the attempt to hit as many peeps as he can, to get the most favor (pvp points) per fight.
Interestingly, in Rift… it’s who actually gets in a fight which gets the most favor. As far as strategies go when it’s capture the fang (flag), and we have 3 healers, usually the best strat, is to let a tank take the flag, and the 3 healers keep healing, while the rest of the peeps harass the enemy. Thats a great strategy! When it all comes together.. we win. More often then not however people run into the fray or take the fang where we get 1 point per tick (versus 6/tick in the middle).
When everyone is out only to get max favor… we lose. Ofc the difference in favor for the winners and losers is generally 100 points per battle.
It’s a creepy development cause you would think pvp was all about winning, you would think this one oasis within the MMO wasn’t grind’tastic and instead about actual gameplay, but no 😦
I always play to win, that is still the primary objective. Even when trying for achievements, I try to incorporate that into the win, rather than allow that to prevent a win. It might take longer, but I love BGs, so no harm there.
That said, I’m not to fussed what people get up to, just so long as they don’t throw the game away. Chasing HKs.. sure… but those kills are helping the overall effort right? I mean, if they aren’t, then they are just pointless (and more likely honor deaths).
I like you can usually be found at LM, or some other node… the HKs still float by as does the rep. I don’t know why everyone is there, what their individual motivation is, but I am not hurting anyone’s game by playing to win.
